As we continue our journey through The Artist’s Way, Week 7 arrived with a theme that feels both comforting and deeply challenging – Recovering a Sense of Connection. This chapter explores the crucial link between creativity and our connections—to ourselves, our art, and the wider world. Julia Cameron inspires us to embrace vulnerability, trust our creative instincts, and foster meaningful connections that nourish our creativity.
Recovering a Sense of Connection
Our creativity suffers when we feel disconnected. Often, this disconnection arises from self-doubt, isolation, or fear of failure. By consciously working to rebuild these connections, we reawaken our creative flow.
“Creativity is an act of faith, and we must train ourselves to trust the still, small voice that will tell us… this is good enough. This is plenty.” — Julia Cameron
Cameron proposes that noticing synchronicities may be crucial for reconnecting. Small coincidences, like a relevant book, a sparking conversation, or an unexpected chance, show we’re on our creative track. The more we notice these moments, the better we understand what to do.
Listening to Our Inner Voice
This week stresses the importance of trusting your intuition. Overthinking and the opinions of others frequently drown out our inner wisdom. Week 7 is all about silencing mental distractions and embracing our intuition.
In my experience, Cameron’s foundational tool, Morning Pages, is extremely useful in this situation. My morning free writing revealed ideas I would have otherwise ignored. Those whispers, when trusted, yielded unexpected insights and boosted my creative confidence.
“In creative recovery, it is not necessary that we change any of our beliefs. It is necessary that we examine them.” — Julia Cameron

Exercises for Recovering A Sense Connection
To deepen your connection, Julia Cameron offers several exercises in week 7:
List Your Allies: List the individuals who have fostered your creativity. Think about how their presence has shaped your journey.
Dialogue with Your Inner Critic: Compose a dialogue between you and your inner critic. Respond with compassion and strength, using your creativity.
Creative Invitation: What activity have you been putting off because you’re scared or unsure? Start it this week, no matter how small the first step is.
Gratitude List: Name five aspects of your creative life you’re currently thankful for. These moments, when acknowledged, cultivate deeper connections and improve creative confidence.
What Week 7 Taught Me
Taking Creative Risks
Cameron highlights that genuine connection demands courage—the willingness to share our thoughts openly, express ourselves authentically, and step outside our comfort zones. For me, this meant embracing imperfection. I stopped worrying about making something “good” and let my creativity flow freely instead. Giving up judgment revealed surprising moments of joy and clarity.
Embracing Play and Curiosity
In Week 7, I rediscovered the value of playful, uninhibited exploration and creation. Cameron motivates us to engage in activities that awaken our curiosity. “Creativity must be freed from the narrow parameters of capital-A Art to include all aspects of our lives,” she writes. Just doodling, dancing, or writing silly poems—playing around helps us rediscover the joy of making things.
Reflection and Growth
Reflecting on Week 7, I recognized the vital role of connection in maintaining creativity. Cultivating relationships, embracing chance encounters, and listening to my intuition better connected me to my creative goals. Creativity thrives not in solitude, but within the complex network of our experiences, feelings, and connections.
Today, listen to your intuition, embrace playfulness, and foster relationships that spark your creativity. The more we reach out, the more our creative energy finds its flow.
